Junk food disguised as health food |
21 February 2005 |
I realise I've been conned. This morning I was having breakfast with the kids. I had my usual two slices of toast and orange juice, while they tucked into some honey-flavoured cereal. Now, honey can't be bad for you, right? Surely honey is positively good for you. What's more, this cereal was fortified (yes, fortified!) with vitamins and minerals. It all sounds pretty good, until you take a closer look at the packet… You see, this cereal was ..

I never knew this could make you fat |
14 February 2005 |
The other day my friend Geoff leant back in his chair, patted his considerable stomach and said 'this is all down to too much stress'. I couldn't help laughing. I reminded him how he enjoyed his food, not to mention the odd pint, and asked him when was the last time he'd seen the inside of the gym. I was surprised by his answer. Since Christmas he's cut out the drink and snacking. He eats relatively healthy, and he leaves the car at home and w ..

What I learned about allergies |
24 June 2005 |
The kids began their shrieking competition at 6am. . . I was late leaving the house because I couldn't find the car keys. (Matt, 5, had decided they would be safer tucked inside one of his shoes.) Then the car's air-conditioning packed in halfway along the M4. It was so hot I felt like sticking my head out of the window to get some air, like a dog. But despite it all, I made it to the Allergy Show on Saturday. The sunshine and muggy heat did ..

Is a killer lurking in your cupboard? |
17 June 2005 |
The pharmaceutical giants have done it again. Yes . . . another drug bites the dust! You may remember that last year, a drug called Vioxx was taken off the market. This non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (or NSAID) was meant to ease joint pain and cure headaches. Instead, it was suspected of causing heart problems. Now research suggests that two more NSAIDS - ibuprofen and naproxen - could also be linked to an increased risk of heart attack. - ..

Are you straining to read this? |
10 June 2005 |
You and I share something in common. And it's not just our devilishly good looks. Right now, we're both staring at a flickering computer screen. If you're like me, you do this every single day, sometimes for hours at a time .. . looking at websites . . . reading emails . . . writing documents . . . Computers are now very much part of our lives. But the mega-companies who produce computers are so keen on their multi-billion pound revenues, th ..

Is this the best way to tackle diabetes...? |
26 July 2005 |
I've suspected it for a long time, but now I know for sure... I'm being stalked by the most ruthless serial killer of modern times... SUGAR! There's just no getting away from it. Sugar is the root cause of some of the worst ailments affecting us today...including type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 'Sugar is without question the number one murderer in the history of humanity', said Sakurazawa, a Japanese natural health expert and author of 50 books ..

How a tennis ball can help the whole family |

Did you know that snoring is the third most common reason why couples split up? No, neither did I. In fact I think Lara's just made it up to make a point. Because, apparently, my snoring has been horrific over the past couple of days. Actually, it's no laughing matter (and I'm not just saying that because Lara's threatened me with the spare room). Snoring can be a sign that you may be suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep what? Maybe you've ne ..

The secret to eating well and losing weight |
19 July 2005 |
Ahhhh... the Summertime! Walks on the beach... ice creams... trips to the country... cream teas... a nice refreshing pint of cider... fish and chips on the pier... ... and more inches round the waistline. Well folks, MY waistline at any rate. I never really was a fan of the elasticated waistband, but now I'm beginning to see the advantages. Why is it that weight is just so hard to shift as you get older? All right, I guess I know the answer ..

Six smart ways to deal with this nasty back problem |
15 July 2005 |
You wouldn't think wallpapering could be that dangerous, would you? No, neither did I, until I went round to help a friend decorate his house. I should have known it would end in tears when I saw the 'equipment' my mate Keith had set up - an old table and two book ends to hold the paper flat. The table was far too low, and after twenty minutes of bending and straightening my back finally gave out. A quick visit to the doctor's told me I'd trap ..
