Is a killer lurking in your cupboard?

17 June 2005

The pharmaceutical giants have done it again.

Yes . . . another drug bites the dust!

You may remember that last year, a drug called Vioxx was taken off the market.

This non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (or NSAID) was meant to ease joint pain and cure headaches.

Instead, it was suspected of causing heart problems.

Now research suggests that two more NSAIDS - ibuprofen and naproxen - could also be linked to an increased risk of heart attack.

--------------------------------------------------------
Alarming news about your friendly pills
--------------------------------------------------------

In a British Medical Journal study, Professor Julia Hippisley-Cox and colleague Carol Coupland looked at the medical files of 9,218 patients who had suffered a heart attack for the first time over a four-year period.

In particular, they looked for evidence of NSAID use.

And what they found was alarming.

Heart-attack patients were more likely to have been taking any of four types of NSAID.

These included the two COX-2 inhibitors - Vioxx and Pfizer's Celebrex (celecoxib) - already flagged up as potential threats.

But there were another two culprits: diclofenac and ibuprofen.

With ibuprofen, the odds of the patient having had a heart attack increased by almost a quarter (24%). For diclofenac it rose by over a half (55%).

Professor Hippisley-Cox said, 'Enough concern exists to warrant a reconsideration of the cardiovascular safety of all NSAIDs.'

And if it's good enough reason for Professor Hippisley-Cox to worry, then it's good enough for me.

So perhaps it's time we all ditched the little pills to tackle our headaches, and turned to natural remedies instead.

And this one might turn out to be the best . . .

-------------------------------------------------------------------
How Queen Victoria's favourite fruit could put an end to headaches
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Deep in the tropical rainforests of South East Asia lies a fruit with so many healing properties, it's practically worshipped by the local people.

'Queen of Fruits' and 'the Fruit of the Gods' they call it.

And it's easy to see why.

After battling through a tough, purple skin, you'll find a white fleshy fruit that's meant to be delicious.

This unique fruit is called the mangosteen, and it's been loved for generations by the rain forest tribes.

Not that it's particularly new to Britain.

Queen Victoria first tasted it in the mid-1800's, and she promptly declared it her favourite fruit.

It seems she was 'very amused.'

But it's more than just a delicious taste.

Mangosteen is used to treat infections, control fever, reduce pain or treat inflammation, diarrhoea, cystitis, gonorrhoea, dysentery, eczema and a variety of other ailments.

And it's all thanks to a family of powerful natural healers contained in the fruit - called Xanthones.
-------------------------------------------------------
The greatest medical discovery of all time?
-------------------------------------------------------

We know about the antioxidant benefits of vitamins C and E, right?

Well Xanthones provides similar benefits, but at a far greater level than either of these two popular vitamins.

In fact, the whole Mangosteen fruit is the single most abundant known source of Xanthones known to mankind. Well, to me at least, and I've been doing a lot of research on this.

Scientific studies suggest that Xanthones may offer support to every system in our body and provide a natural, beneficial and safe alternative to many conventional therapies or treatments.

The future of this regal fruit is so bright it's got many scientists in a real lather.

This included Bruce Wilkin MD, who called it, 'One of the great medical discoveries of all time.'

There's not much more you can add to that.

Unless you're J. Frederic Templeman, M.D, who is a bit more specific:

'Mangosteen provides powerful support for every organ system in the human body. This fact is being confirmed on a daily basis by clinical experience . . . I am convinced that Mangosteen will, without a doubt, be the most successful food supplement ever.'

I tell you, I'm going to try and get my hands on this fruit as soon as possible. And I'm not going to wait for a headache to turn up before trying it!

But in the meantime, if you haven't got any mangosteen in your fruit bowl just yet, here's another great remedy for headaches . . .

-------------------------------------------
It's not just for chips
-------------------------------------------

This is a remedy my wife swears by.

In her opinion, Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the most amazing cures for headaches and migraines. And I have to say I agree with her.

The trick is to take it at the onset of symptoms. Just mix 2 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 oz of water, and take it two times a day. Add a tad more vinegar if it's a real pounder.

Then it's bye-bye headache.

That's it for now. Make sure you have a great weekend.

Yours, as ever,

Ray Collins
