The powerful natural combination that burns off fat
30th June 2006
Strange people, those folk from Kent…
Seems they like to eat elephant and rhino. Oh, and the occasional bison when they can get their hands on it.
Mind you, I am talking about the people of Kent 400,000 years ago.
I just read today that archaeologists have found ancient elephant bones and flint weapons along the Channel Tunnel rail link.
Elephant bones on the line… now there's a proper excuse for a train to be late!
And accompanying the article was an old Victorian picture showing a bunch of slim, healthy cavemen fighting a giant elephant. Which got me thinking…
I wonder if there were any obese cavemen?
Obviously I'm no expert, but I've never seen prehistoric man pictured as fat.
And I've never seen cave graffiti proclaiming 'Ug is fat' with an arrow pointing to a round man in a loincloth.
So my guess is they were a pretty healthy lot.
And until they find the fossilised remains of an ancient burger (or McRemains), I doubt whether I'll think differently…
Because there's no doubt in my mind that the obesity epidemic that's battering this country is all down to fatty, processed junk food.
Which is why I should be delighted at this latest breakthrough in the fight against obesity…
The trouble is, I'm not. Far from it.
In fact, I think this could be disastrous…
This 'miracle cure' from a drugs company just doesn't add up
Here's the story.
Britain is about to get a fatbusting drug that could reduce bodyweight by 10%.
It could also help fight diabetes AND (weirdly) help people cut out smoking.
The drug's called Rimonabant, and it targets the body's endocannabinoid system, which controls appetite, weight and metabolism.
In a series of tests carried out on more that 6,000 patients, around 25% of them lost more than 10% of their body weight.
And about half lost 5%.
If you're fifteen stone, that's anything between 11lbs and one and a half stone gone without any effort - and that's a mighty attractive proposition.
And that's not all.
This heroic drug also improved glucose levels, cholesterol and triglyceride blood fats.
Now, the experts are desperate to get people onto this. With obesity rates spiralling out of control (why do things always 'spiral' out of control I wonder?), the establishment will do anything to get people slimmer and healthier.
But forgive me if I don't get out the streamers and lead a cheer of hip hip hooray.
Of course, this being a drugs company we're talking about, Rimonabant will cost. About fiftyfive quid a month to be precise.
But for once it's not the money that bothers me about this…

Is this 'lazy pill' curing the problem, or masking it?
You know what I don't like about this...?
It's just too EASY.
Pop a pill, and all your troubles will disappear.
Fancy that cake? No problem. In fact, why not have two cakes and a few biscuits, because with this handy little pill in your pocket, the weight can come straight off!
And I don't mean ordinary cakes, I mean wedding cakes! Just have what you want, and this pill will take care of it!
Okay, I'm being facetious, but the fact that there's no hard work involved worries me.
If Lara reads that last sentence while she's eating, I'll have to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre on her. Obviously anyone who knows me knows I don't champion hard work very often.
But there's a difference between hard work that involves clearing out a garage, and hard work that involves your health.
And a little man-made pill that cuts one tenth of your body weight just sounds too good to be true.
Instead, if you want to lose weight, lower your cholesterol and get your triglyceride levels under control, I suggest these good, old-fashioned natural remedies:
- Drink cold water. It will help increase your metabolism and remove toxins and fat. Drinking ice cold water before meals will also shrink your stomach, so you'll feel full quicker.
- Get grazing. Eat a small balanced meal every three hours. If you go for long stretches without eating, your body winds down to a slow tick, and fat just sits around in your cells.
- NEVER skip breakfast - it's the most important meal of the day. The minute you eat breakfast, your metabolism ignites and gets to work shifting the fat.
- Don't always take the easy option. I know jumping in your car to get the paper can be tempting, but try and walk those short journeys instead. Likewise, dodge the lift and take the stairs, and try and squeeze in extra movements during your day. Studies show that even little movements like tapping your toes can burn calories.
- Eat foods that burn off fat! Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, blueberries, carrots, apples and beetroots are all excellent foods when it comes to shaving the pounds off. If you find you don't eat enough fresh fruit, invest in a juicer and get blitzing! Play around a little, and invent your own combinations.
And last, but certainly not least…
Is this nature's most powerful fat-burning combination?
Taken separately, honey, garlic and vinegar are all nutritious, healthy foods with a wide variety of health-giving properties…
But recently scientists have discovered that when they are combined, they turn into an explosive fat-burning remedy that can help you lose weight better than any diet:
'When the substances in garlic and vinegar mix in the body, there is a spontaneous chemical reaction between their active essences and substances caused by our natural digestive processes... each releases powers in the other that would remain untapped if you took just one or the other.'
In other words, garlic and vinegar on their own have great health benefits, but mix the two together, and your body becomes a fat-burning furnace!
And with the honey acting as a natural sweetener, it's a perfect combination.
The trouble is, it's a bit of a bore trying to get honey, garlic AND vinegar into your diet on daily basis.
Luckily, I've found the answer.
Just take a look at this, and see how you can get all three of these substances into your diet EASILY:

Another tip to strengthen your eyes
I've had so many letters from Good Life Letter readers recently (which I love, so keep them coming!), and so many of your own tips that I'm going to try and fit more of them into future issues.
Take this one from a reader in New Zealand;
“Very interested in your 'eye gym' chapter. The eye exercises are extremely helpful towards improvement to one's vision. My father, who lived to be 100! did his eye exercises every day; and after a while he was able to discard his glasses. In addition to those exercises you have mentioned, he also carried out cold douches to the eyes.
Fill a wash hand basin with coldwater !!!, lean over basin, with both hands cupped palms up, splash up the water into the face try to aim at the eyes, which of course should be closed! Twenty times. Once daily. After about three months (if you can persevere) there should be an improvement to focussing.
This is NOT is the time to give up. Keep going, and the improvement will continue! This exercise is intended to strengthen the eyes muscles, which have become slack.”
Thanks for that!
I'm sure we can all learn a lot from someone who reached the ripe old age of 100!
Have a great weekend, and I'll be back again on Sunday.
Until then,
Yours as ever,
Ray Collins
