Could two Canadian ladies have found a cure for cancer?
7th October 2005
Whatever happened to Martin Lewis?
Remember him...the newsreader who wished there was more good news in the press?
'WIFE LETS HUSBAND SLEEP IN FRONT OF THE TELLY WHILE TEA IS COOKED' would be my favourite headline.
But to be honest I'd be happy with anything right now, because recently I've read nothing but bad news where our health's concerned.
First off, it came to light that certain powerful remedies are being denied the Great British public, because it's just too expensive to supply them through the NHS.
Too EXPENSIVE?
Sorry, how much does that allexpenses trip to New York to 'study' police methods cost again?
And even if they are cheap enough for the likes of us, many of them will become so weighed down with red tape, it'll take years before they reach us.
But some unlucky souls simply can't wait years for treatments. They need them now.
Although my modest letter can't hope to plug the hole left by the bureaucrats' laziness and greed...over the next couple of weeks I'll look at some of the most serious illnesses being ignored by the authorities, and what you can do about it.
I'll start with this...
------------------------------------------------------
Could two charming Canadian ladies really have found a cure for cancer?
-------------------------------------------------------
It's a shocking state of affairs when cancer patients have to wait more than two years for vital cancer treatments to become available on the NHS.
But that's exactly what's happening in the UK, says cancer information charity CancerBACUP.
Shocking isn't it? But unfortunately, hardly surprising.
As per usual, we're left to help ourselves. But maybe this could offer some hope...
Back in the 1930s, a Canadian nurse called Rene Caisse discovered that, by mixing a secret blend of ingredients, she could create a powerful tea that worked wonders on cancer patients.
She named it Essiac (her name spelt backwards).
It was so effective, she opened a clinic and, along with her friend Mary McPherson. They treated numerous sufferers, who claimed the tea cured them. Others claimed the tea relieved the agony of cancer and made their lives much more bearable.
Rene's mixture produced such incredible results, doctors petitioned the Canadian Government in 1938 to pass a Bill to 'authorise Rene Caisse to practice medicine in the Province of Ontario in the treatment of Cancer and conditions resulting there from'.
But it seems authorities have ALWAYS been idiotic...
The bill failed.
Nevertheless, Essiac remains one of the most popular alternative remedies for cancer. Some sufferers claim it improves their ability to fight cancer and reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Although the exact mixture remains a secret, the four primary ingredients in the tea are:
Burdock Root
Sheep Sorrel (Two types of Sheep Sorrel exist. Hybrid or Domestic Sheep Sorrel and Wild Sheep Sorrel. Make sure your version of Essiac is made or contains wild sheep sorrel weed it's much stronger)
Slippery Elm
Turkey Rhubarb
All natural, and all available NOW. To me, this sounds like something worth investigating.

warning. And always make sure you consult your doctor before trying any new treatment (especially if you're currently on prescription drugs).
Next Friday I'll be focussing on another illness that's being helped along by the authorities' lack of effort - Alzheimer's.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Do you suffer from this condition?
-----------------------------------------------------------
Earlier this week, I heard from fellow Good Lifer B.A. who suffers from a complaint that's causing her some discomfort - fungal nail infections.
This is usually caused by a fungus called onychomycosis (no, I can't say it either).
Symptoms are thick and discoloured nails, brittle, misshapen nails, and/or pain in your toes or fingertips.
Now, this is one of those embarrassing subjects that people are loathe to talk about.
I mean, it's fine to say 'I keep getting these headaches' to friends down the pub... but you wouldn't interrupt a conversation to ask 'Anyone know how to clear up nail fungus?' before slapping your bare foot on the table.
(Well, my mate Dan might, but that's for another letter.)
There are many man-made prescription treatments for nail fungus, but most of the studies I've read reveal a whole load of side effects including nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and liver damage.
(Don't you just love the way 'liver damage' is airily waived away as a side effect? It's like using a guillotine to cure your headache. Side effect: will lose head and die.)
So B.A., try these natural remedies instead. I hope they help...
- Apple cider vinegar (ACV). Soak the affected nails for 15 minutes a day in a basin of warm water, with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar, and 10 drops of lavender essential oil. The vinegar restores the proper pH balance to the skin, toughening it up against infections, while the lavender has antimicrobial properties. Make sure you dry your feet thoroughly (wet feet often trigger the problem in the first place).
- Grapefruit seed extract. This extract is a powerful all-round antimicrobial remedy and is an excellent disinfectant. Make a solution of 100 drops in two ounces of water and apply to the affected areas with a cotton bud two or three times a day.
- Oregano oil. This oil is probably the best anti-fungal substance you can find, but there's a downside. It's so strong it might irritate your skin. If this happens, dilute the oil in several drops of olive oil or aloe. Use a Q-Tip or toothbrush to get the oil under the nail.
- Vicks' VapoRub. It contains eucalyptus oil and thymol (derived from thyme oil), both known as powerful anti-fungals. Apply to the affected area every other day for 2-3 weeks.
That lot should help you win the battle!
---------------------------------------------
And finally, nail lovers...
---------------------------------------------
While I'm on the subject, I thought you'd be interested in some ways to keep your nails in tip-top condition, fungus or no fungus...
- Keep them neat and trim.
- Don't use the same nail trimmer or file on healthy nails and infected nails.
- Wear 100 percent cotton socks. Change your socks when they are damp from sweat or if your feet get wet. Put on clean, dry socks every day.
- Wear shoes with good support and a wide toe area. Don't wear pointed shoes that press your toes together. (Bad news for Court Jesters).
- Avoid walking barefoot in wet public areas, such as changing rooms.
That's it for today. Have an absolutely brilliant weekend, and I'll be back before you know it.
Yours, as ever,
Ray Collins
