How to beat metabolic syndrome and hot flushes
5th June 2009
• The link between sunshine and metabolic
syndrome
• A natural way to cut your risk of heart
disease and diabetes
• How to cure hot flushes
If you can ignore the relentless misery spewing from
the radio and TV...
Or put aside the bellowing EVERYTHING IS
DOOMED newspaper headlines... and forget about
global warming and war and swine flu and
politicians' expenses...
Then there was a lot to be happy about in the past
week... thanks to a dose of good British weather.
Last Sunday, after I'd sent out The Good Life Letter I
decided to throw a barbeque for friends. I make a
mean homemade burger... and, if I say so myself, my
salad with homemade manuka honey and vinegar
dressing is the business.
And yes... I DID bore my friends with the health
benefits of the manuka honey dressing.
And yes... my wife did threaten to stick her head in
the barbeque if I carried on about honey, garlic or
vinegar one more time.
But then one of her best friends arrived nursing a
nasty insect bite. She ASKED me for some manuka
honey to put on it. And by the time she'd finished her
Ray Burger, the bite hardly hurt at all.
VINDICATION!
Aside from me gambolling about on the lawn, woozy
on glasses of wine and thrusting honey at people,
there was another reason to be cheerful about the
weather....
A team at Warwick university has just shown that
just by spending some more time in the sun, you can
significantly cut your risk of heart disease and
diabetes.
As you know from my previous letters on this,
sunlight stimulates your skin's production of vitamin
D, a vitamin that is seriously lacking in most older
people.
In the study the researchers looked at 3,000 people
aged 50 to 70. A whopping 94% had a vitamin D
deficiency.
This lack of vitamin D is linked to something called
'metabolic syndrome'. No I've not come across this
before either. Apparently it's a disorder that
increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
So unsurprisingly, 42% of the people in the study
had metabolic syndrome.
The good news is that the simple remedy for this is
to get out in the sunshine as regularly as you can.
As per my usual advice, don't stay out in the sun too
long. Go out for short periods of time, or utilise that
garden shade.
Ed Yong from Cancer Research told the Express
newspaper on May 20th, when these findings were
released:
'The amount of sunlight it takes to make enough
vitamin D is always less than the amounts that
cause reddening or burning so it should be possible
to get the benefits of this vitamin without increasing
the risk of skin cancer.'
Hopefully me saying all this hasn't jinxed the
weather so that it rains for the next three months!

How to survive hot flushes
I had an interesting email lately which I'd like to pass
on. One of my readers who moved recently to Dubai
wrote to tell me about her ways of dealing with hot
flushes.
'I read up about natural remedies and then devised
my own regime, which after 6 weeks has left me
totally flush free! A minor miracle I can tell you. The
joy of sleeping again all night is fabulous too!'
Here's what she took:
* 800 Vit E iu every day for 6-8 weeks. (If you
feel it has worked after 6 weeks, you can
reduce dose to 400iu a day) otherwise carry
on for the 8 weeks and then reduce.
* 1000 mg Vit C and a good multivitamin every
day also
* A full tea cup of organic soya milk a day
(apparently Japanese ladies don't suffer with
flushes, and its thought it's because of their
soya intake, so I added this as an extra.)
Absolutely fantastic feedback and I'm glad this
worked out.
If you have any remedies that you've found work for
you, then by all means sent them in. I'm always on
the lookout for tried and tested natural remedies. |
'Oi, what about porridge?'
After my email about dodgy sugar-laden 'health'
cereals the other week, I offered some tips for a
healthy breakfast. But I missed out one very popular
meal...
One reader emailed me to say
'Read your breakfast report....good stuff as
always...being from Scotland I noticed you missed
out on a trick here ..what about good old porridge
oats ? A proven good start to the day!'
Fair enough, five million Scots folk can't be wrong!
I'm happy to add it to my list.
And finally today,
A tip for clearing a cough...
Another Good Life emailed me to say:
'The very best cough medicine I have ever used
(and always recommend to friends and family) is
Potters Cough Remover - it's the only one over the
counter or on prescription that really works! Many
health food stores, some Boots the chemist, many
independent chemists and Tesco sell it. Take it at
the first suggestion of a cough and, even though
everyone around you may be hacking and
wheezing, you'll be OK!'
Or if you want to save a heap of money on cough
medicine, you should check out my book The Honey
Garlic and Vinegar Miracle. It has a whole load of
natural homemade remedies for coughs and colds.
They're easy and quick to make, and they cost
pennies.

Enjoy your weekend. |
