The powerful combination that does so much good
17th December 2006
Well I survived, but it was Hell.
I'm talking about last Friday's 'fun' shopping trip.
Four hours of elbowing through crowds, standing outside a changing room while Lara tried on twenty party dresses before buying the first one, nearly losing the children, walking past pubs without going in...
I tell you, I must have been a murderer in my past life
for this to happen to me.
Still, I'm back in one piece (though the mental scars will last forever), and my computer seems to be working okay.
Which is brilliant news, because it allowed me to receive some excellent letters from fellow Good Lifers...
Tales from The Crypt... I mean Chemist
So, this prescription mixup is a oneoff eh...?
It's all under control eh...?
Well this little tale from Grania just goes to show we should look at what we're handed over the counter carefully...
'I had to laugh at your latest letter only two people coming forward to say they had the wrong prescription!! (Viagra) ha ha .
It reminded me (in a different way) about the time the chemist gave me the wrong prescription, should have been an inhaler and was something totally different. When I got home and saw what I had been given I went straight back and pointed out the error.
You won't believe this but I was made to feel this was MY mistake and was forced to pay another prescription charge to get what was really mine.!
I was flabbergasted... had to fork out another fiver or whatever it was then when he asked for the other item back I got rather bloody minded (whoops excuse language but I was MAD) and said no, I paid for it so I keep it!!!!'

Thanks for that Grania, and well done for sticking up for yourself! How on earth could it have been your fault?
Luckily, you were given something totally different, so it was easy to spot the mistake.
But this really proves a valuable point... if you need to take prescription drugs, ALWAYS check and double check what you're given.
When your doctor hands you your prescription, make sure you know what it says. If you can't read his or her handwriting, ask them to spell it for you and jot it down.
So when you pick up your prescription, you'll be able to make sure your getting something that helps you...
... not something that's useless or worse still, something that could be bad for you.
The powerful combination that does so much good
Here's another letter from Good Lifer Philip B...
Well I say letter, it's actually a whole lot of excellent
uses for honey and cinnamon he wants to share with you.
- HEART DISEASE:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, and use instead of jam. Eat it regularly forbreakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who already had an attack, if they do this process daily, are kept miles away from the
next attack.
Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heartbeat.
In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalizes the arteries and veins.
- BLADDER INFECTIONS:
Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in thebladder.
- TOOTHACHE:
Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth. This may be applied three times a day until the tooth stops aching.
- CHOLESTEROL:
Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of cinnamon powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. |
- COLDS:
Those sufferings from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic coughs, colds and clear the sinuses.
- UPSET STOMACH:
Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.
- GAS:
According to the studies done in India & Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.
- IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.
Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.
- INDIGESTION:
Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food, relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.
There's even more from Philip - all great tips - that I'll share with you next time.
And finally...
More magnesium isn't just good for smokers trying to quit...
Here's a question from Good Lifer Ed, which throws up an interesting point...
'... if I take extra magnesium will it help relieve my
symptoms of Parkinson's?'
Well Ed, I've looked into this, and research suggests that it could indeed help relieve your symptoms.
Here's a description of disease from the Parkinson's
Disease Society (http://www.parkinsons.org.uk)
'Parkinson's occurs as result of a loss of nerve cells in the part of the brain known as the substantia nigra.
These cells are responsible for producing a chemical known as dopamine, which allows messages to be sent to the parts of the brain that co-ordinate movement.
With the depletion of dopamine-producing cells, these parts of the brain are unable to function normally.'
Yes - it's that feel good chemical Dopamine again.
And as we discovered in Friday's issue of The Good Life Letter, magnesium increases your levels of dopamine.
And I found this little nugget of information too...
Scientists discovered that 450 mg of magnesium supplied daily successfully controlled seizures in 30 epileptics. As far as I can see, it worked on every single person.
Another study found that the lower the magnesium blood levels were in a sufferer, the harsher the fits were.
So for anyone suffering from Parkinson's Disease, go and discuss the benefits of magnesium with your doctor.
But do this BEFORE you start taking any supplements - because there are some cases where concentrated doses of magnesium can be dangerous.
In the meantime, why not try my all time favourite medicine (food!), and stock up on fresh grass juice (e.g. wheat grass, barley grass), vegetable juices, kelp, seafood, green leaves, molasses, soaked nuts and oily seeds, and sprouted seeds.
All of these are excellent sources of magnesium.
That's it for today. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, and I'll be back next week.
Take care and good health!
Yours as ever,
Ray Collins
