Nature's best liver protector
5th June 2006
I wonder who coined the phrase 'boys will be boys'?
Because I'd like to meet them and tell them it just doesn't work when you've left the garden in a right royal mess after half finishing a new fence.
Well, it doesn't work with Lara anyway. Because I've just tried it out on her, and all I got back was a steely gaze and an exasperated sigh.
Ahhh... how quickly things change.
On Saturday I was an all-conquering hero, triumphantly returning from B&Q and setting about the broken fence in the back garden with real gusto.
Sawing, painting, hitting my finger with a hammer, swearing... there was no stopping me.
In fact I was SO efficient, our littlest started to cry, thinking Daddy had been replaced by this slightly overweight energetic alien, who had landed on earth to give it a good tidy up.
I was magnificent.
But it all went wrong on Sunday. And you can lay the blame at the feet of my friend Pete D.
Birthdays - the hidden health risk
Saturday was his 42nd birthday, but what with kids, the football (I think some team called Eng-er-land were playing), and my fence-mending mission, Saturday was out.
So I met up with him for a quick drink on Sunday.
One quick drink, and I'd finish off the fence in the afternoon. What could possibly go wrong?
Well here I am, on Monday, typing away in my study (renamed Dog House), staring out at a half-finished fence, feeling a little worse for wear.
But birthdays only come round once a year, right?
Anyway, to make amends, I'm cooking dinner right after I've finished this letter. Although on current form I'll probably just half cook it and promise I'll finish it off tomorrow.
So, what are we looking at today?

Nature's best liver protector (especially when it's taken in this format)
With the summer well and truly here, and holidays probably fast approaching, I fully expect you to be out and enjoying yourself in the coming weeks.
It may sound corny, but life really is for living, and a few sins here and there never hurt anyone.
Though they might not put up a garden fence.
But while enjoying some of the high life and unwinding in the sunshine is (in my book) good for you, going too far too often can have serious consequences - especially on the liver.
You see the liver processes nutrients, drugs, toxins, and any other substance entering the body through the intestines, lungs, or skin. It's one of the most overworked organs we have, and often the most overlooked.
But there are steps you can take to protect your liver when you indulge a little too much...
And one of nature's most powerful remedies is Milk Thistle.
Milk thistle is a natural liver detoxifier that contains a powerful compound called silymarin.
This defends the liver from many industrial toxins such as carbon tetrachloride - a nasty substance that good old big business has pumped into the air and our water supplies.
And also from more common substances like alcohol.
Here's how it works...
So powerful, it can beat one of the deadliest liver toxins in the world
Milk thistle prevents toxins from entering the liver by guarding the organ's numerous doorways-the membranes of liver cells.
Milk Thistle acts as a bouncer, refusing the rowdy toxins entry into the liver. Of course, the toxins don't just give up. They fight to get in. But Milk Thistle can slow them down until the kidneys swing into action and throw them out of the body.
And if you're wondering juts how powerful Milk Thistle is, just listen to this little story... |
The deathcap mushroom is one of the most notorious liver toxins known to man. If you eat this little fella, you're in big trouble.
But listen to this...
A group of 49 patients with deathcap poisoning were given injections (20 mg/kg daily) of silymarin, a major ingredient in Milk Thistle.
Now, the death rate from deathcap poisoning usually stands somewhere between thirty and forty percent.
But after taking silymarin, ALL 49 patients survived!
And study after study shows that Milk Thistle is a truly powerful protection against liver disease.
So I should be shouting about Milk Thistle from the roof tops, right? When it comes to looking after your liver, what else do you need?
Well, don't get me wrong - Milk Thistle is indeed a powerful natural remedy that I believe everyone could benefit from...
It's just that I think I've found something better!
