Men! Are you the one in ten?
5th November 2006
They say that impotence affects one in ten men in the UK.
This is a shockingly high figure…. 23 million sufferers… but it gets worse when you think about it.
Because surely this also affects women?
I mean, shall we say, “It takes two to tango”.
Considering it's such a huge health problem, I was surprised to check back over my old Good Life Letters and see that I hadn't dedicated one to this issue.
So I thought I'd cover almost every angle of the problem in just one letter.
This is actually very easy, because I have a copy of “How To Stay Out of The Doctor's Office”.
I recommended this book a few months back. You may remember… it takes an illness or ailment and, in just a few pages, completes a rundown of everything you need to know in note form, including conventional medicine AND alternative therapies… with case histories too.
Here's what the authors have to say about impotence…

“Impotence”
From 'HOW TO STAY OUT OF THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE'
By Dr. Edward M. Wagner with Sylvia Goldfarb
DEFINITION
The inability for a male to achieve or maintain an erection or have a normal ejaculation. (Erection is not necessary for orgasm or ejaculation)
CAUSES
Medications used to treat high blood pressure
Medications used to treat ulcers
Antihistamines
Anti-depressants
Tranquilisers
Chemotherapy for cancer
Oestrogen used in treatment of prostate cancer
Narcotics decrease libido
Alcoholism
Organic nervous conditions
Lowered pineal gland and hypocampus function
Low blood sugar
Over consumption of caffeine
Scar tissue from surgery in gonadal area
Hypothyroidism
Decreased hormonal levels.
Smoking can lower testosterone levels and cause accumulation of large amounts of carbon dioxide, which decreases the amount of oxygen delivered to the cells.
An insufficient amount of oxygen in the cells causes them to become dysfunctional. Smoking also constricts small arteries in the gonadal area, causing a decreased blood supply.
Eating food containing DES (Diethylstilbestrol), the growth hormone fed to animals and poultry, causes destruction of virility in men. Heating of the genitals by saunas or hot tubs, or wearing tight ants slows the production of male hormones.
CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT
- Hormonal Therapy
- Psychotherapy
- Surgery - Implantation of penile prosthesis.
PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT
Side effects of hormonal therapy can cause other problems in your system that may be even worse than the original situation.
Surgery is not always successful and leaves scar tissues which causes problems later in life.
ALTERNATIVE NATURAL REMEDIES
|
- Diet
Eating oysters and clams were an old folk remedy for curing impotence. Although I do not recommend eating shellfish due to their toxic content, there is some merit to this remedy. Oysters and clams are rich in zinc, and important mineral for prostate gland function, normal sperm count and sexual libido.
Other good sources of zinc are wheat germ and organ meats.
- Supplements
High potency multi-vitamin / mineral combination once daily.
Zinc picolinate, 20mg twice daily
Vitamin E, 400 I.U once daily
Vitamin C, 55 mg, four times daily
Beta carotene A, 25,000 I.U once daily
- Herbs
Liquorice is a stimulant
Damania increases sperms count.
Sarsaparilla stimulates circulation
Capsicum stimulates other herbs to go to the location where they are needed.
Siberian ginseng contains testosterone to help correct impotence.
Saw palmetto nourishes the reproductive glands.
Ginkgo biloba helps with the circulation of blood to the testicle area.
- Amino Acids
L-Arginine, 1000mg three times daily on an empty stomach is good for formation and activity of sperm. A high sperm count often helps activate libido/
L-Histadine, 500mg, twice daily on an empty stomach, is an excellent carrier for zinc.
- Adjunctive therapy
Men who fear not being able to perform to the expectations of their partner are with the wrong person, and should definitely make a change. Unless you feel comfortable and at ease, you will have problems.

Pretty comprehensive, right?
Of course, you might ask: “What about Viagra?”
Well, yes it works. There's no doubt about that. But it costs. And there are a lot of fake versions doing the rounds, thanks to spammers and con artists.
The other problem with a short-term solution like Viagra is that it discourages people from seeking treatment.
Instead of visiting a doctor and then trying all the remedies listed above, most men just pop a pill.
Potential problems include: a strain on the heart, and problems with blood pressure.
This seems an unnecessary risk when you have natural products like Ginkgo Biloba, which boosts blood flow and is free of side effects.
In a study conducted at the University of California, ginkgo reversed sexual problems in 84% of men who were taking antidepressant drugs such as Prozac
A pretty good strike rate.
Of course, guys, it's up to you. Just make sure you're armed with the facts.
Yours, as ever,
Ray Collins
